Rudy Giuliani’s lawyers seek to withdraw from his defamation case due to unpaid legal fees, as he faces ongoing financial and legal challenges.
Rudy Giuliani’s legal team has filed a motion to withdraw from representing him in a defamation lawsuit filed by two Georgia election workers. The lawsuit alleges that Giuliani made false claims about the workers’ involvement in election fraud during the 2020 presidential election. The motion, submitted on November 14, 2024, cites Giuliani’s failure to pay legal fees as the primary reason for the withdrawal.
The two election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, have accused Giuliani of spreading baseless allegations that they tampered with ballots, leading to threats and harassment. In December 2023, a federal jury awarded Freeman and Moss nearly $150 million in damages, finding Giuliani liable for defamation.
Giuliani’s financial difficulties have been well-documented. In July 2024, a judge dismissed his bankruptcy case, citing repeated “uncooperative conduct,” including a failure to comply with court orders and disclose sources of income. PBS Additionally, in September 2023, law firm Davidoff Hutcher & Citron sued Giuliani for over $1.3 million in unpaid legal fees.
The motion to withdraw from the defamation case underscores the ongoing challenges Giuliani faces in managing his legal and financial obligations. The court has yet to rule on the motion, and Giuliani has not publicly commented on the development.
